Besides Zia, her two sons, also detained on corruption charges, would be allowed to join the funeral of Tayeba Majumdar, 87, who died in a hospital in northwestern Dinajpur on Friday night, hours after she was admitted there with chest pain.

Officials said Zia, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief who is being held at a makeshift sub-jail at parliament complex, would be free to go to her Dhaka Cantonment residence, where the body of her mother is expected to brought from Dinajpur.

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Major Shamsuddin Haidar Siddiqui, said they were expecting an order from the Home Ministry on Zia's parole shortly.

According to earlier practices, he said, Zia and her sons Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko could be freed for maximum 10 hours but would not be allowed to go beyond the city limit under the jail code.

BNP and family sources said Majumdar's body would be brought to Dhaka later on Saturday to enable Zia and her sons to have the last glimpse and join the funeral prayers.
