Deshmukh’s comments were uncalled for: Alva
Congress general secretary Margaret Alva on Wednesday disapproved of Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s reported ‘anti-farmer’ remarks, saying the comments were “uncalled for”.
“It is not a question of condemning an individual... It is not in good taste. It is uncalled for,” she told reporters in reply to a volley of questions on the issue. Ms Alva said the plight of farmers of Vidarbha has attracted the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has visited the area more than once and has also come out with a major package.
“Am I a headmistress to check everything?” she remarked when queried whether she has asked for a report from the chief minister in the wake of Mr Deshmukh’s comments that have created controversy. She said several farmers from Vidarbha have met Sonia Gandhi, especially the vast difference in compensation to cotton and sugarcane growers in the event of damage to the crop.
Replying to a question on the BJP and Shiv Sena burying the hatchet, she took a dim view of the development.
Asked to comment on BJP leaders being invited in mosques in the state to explain on the Waqf property scandal, she said it was Congress which has started investigations in the matter and is “not trying to collude” with those responsible for the irregularities.
