Deshmukh skips meeting with Alva

The Congress’ organisational wing and the Maharashtra government lack co-ordination, feels the party’s general secretary in charge of the state, Margaret Alva.

MUMBAI: The Congress’ organisational wing and the Maharashtra government lack co-ordination, feels the party’s general secretary in charge of the state, Margaret Alva.

In true Congress style, the high command recently ruled out leadership change in the state, but at the same time it also ensured that the anti-Deshmukh camp doesn’t lose heart — the party leadership dispatched Ms Alva to Mumbai to “talk to various leaders and review co-ordination between the party organisation and the government”. As part of this exercise, Ms Alva on Tuesday met party ministers at Sahyadri guest house.

Mr Deshmukh set the tone for Ms Alva’s meeting by staying away from it. As per the plan, Mr Deshmukh, along with the state PCC chief, Prabha Rau, was to be a part of the exercise. “I don’t know why she (Ms Alva) is here, you better ask her,” said Mr Deshmukh. Ms Alva, who is here on a three-day visit, was scheduled to attend the meeting of the Congress co-ordination committee at Mr Deshmukh’s official residence. But the meeting took place at Sahyadri.

Ms Alva has had discussions with the ministers and later met them on a one-to-one basis. The discussions centred on improving co-ordination between the party and the government. “She expressed displeasure over lack of co-ordination between the party and the government in a variety of issues,” a Congress leader said. On Wednesday, she will meet Congress legislators at Sahyadri and address a meeting of the poll manifesto implementation committee.

On August 23, Ms Alva will attend a meeting of the Congress-NCP co-ordination committee. The meeting assumes significance as it comes in the wake of the recent differences between the two coalition partners on various issues. The NCP is annoyed over an MPCC report on farmers’ suicides, which sought to blame NCP president and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar for the plight.

In fact, senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal had made public his displeasure with the Congress over the report at a recent Cabinet meeting. A lack of cohesion between the two parties on the manner in which the Srikrishna Commission report, probing the 1992-93 Mumbai riots, to be implemented may also figure at the meeting. She will also meet state Congress functionaries on August 23.
