GUWAHATI: With militants hard pressed in the wake of demonetization of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes, Assam police has sounded alert asking banks to strictly monitor the bank accounts and keep hawk eye on deposits and withdrawal.

Police has intelligence inputs which suggests that militants and unscrupulous elements may use new ways and means to exchange the old notes. These elements may target educational institutions where through intermediaries they may exchange or deposit money.

Banks along the interstate border of Assam-Nagaland, Assam-Arunachal Pradesh are kept under constant watch.

Assam Police Director General Mukesh Sahay held meeting with as many as 14 banks and RBI.

Police found that militant outfits are making frantic calls to businessmen, sources and sympathizers to exchange to the demonetised Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes.Even they are seeking assistance of family members to withdraw money.(eom)
