Police personnel should be seen fair and credible: NSA Ajit Doval
New Delhi: Democracy will fail if police fails to enforce the law, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said on Wednesday. The comment assumes significance in the wake of Delhi riots which have claimed 48 lives.

Addressing young police officers from across the country at an event in Gurugram, the NSA advised them to be “credible and fair” in the eyes of the common people.

While inaugurating the third ‘Young Superintendents of Police Conference’ organised by BPR&D, a police think tank under the Union home ministry, Doval said: “Lawmaking is the most sacrosanct job in a democracy. It is not done by an imperial ruler or from the pulpit of a religious leader but by the representatives of the people and you are the enforcers of that law... If you fail, democracy will fail.”

Doval said: “If the police personnel are not able to enforce the law, then framing of that law is immaterial. A law is as good as it is executed on the ground… In a democracy, it is extremely important to be totally dedicated to the law. You should be doing things fairly and objectively.”

Delhi Police’s role during the riots was questioned by several residents of the affected areas. They alleged the cops failed to act despite being informed about the tense situation in those areas. After Delhi Police failed to control the situation, home minister Amit Shah had deputed Doval to take charge of the situation.
