Demand in Lok Sabha for allotment of CWG Village flats to MPs

NEW DELHI: A demand was raised in the Lok Sabha for allotment of Commonwealth Games Village flats to MPs even as the government said it was contemplating ways to punish the builder for exceeding the mandate of construction.

Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath said extra area was built in every flat of the CWG Village.

"Had the contractor built only an additional tower, we would have demolished it. But all the flats exceed the area that had been mandated," he said replying to the debate on The National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second Bill, 2011.

He said his ministry was discussing with Delhi Lt Governor as to how to punish the builder.

Earlier, Samajwadi Party member Shailender Kumar raised the demand for allotment of the flats, constructed on the banks of Yamuna River.

"The flats built for housing participants of CWG have not been allotted to anyone. I want that these should be allotted. Several honourable members (of Lok Sabha) are interested in these," Kumar said addressing Kamal Nath.

The Minister said there was no scheme for allotment of the flats to MPs but if Speaker Meira Kumar directed so, then this could be considered.

He said the government first wanted 100 flats to be auctioned to determine the market value. After that, if the government could give to officials if the Finance Ministry or the Home Ministry or any other ministry wanted.

At this Kumar wanted the Speaker to give directions. He was supported by a few other members.

Kumar responded by saying that she would discuss the matter with Nath and other departments concerned.
