In Meghalaya, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) met Meghalaya chief minister and submitted a proposal for an Assam-type NRC. The state government has sent the request to the political department for examination but Meghalaya’s deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said it was a sensitive matter.
“If need be, we will discuss it in the Cabinet whether an NRC-like exercise is required in the state or not,” he said. KSU in its memorandum had said that such an exercise would weed out doubtful voters from the state’s electoral rolls. Meghalaya districts bordering Assam are also on a high alert in anticipation of ‘illegal migrants’ from across the state. A senior official said “north Garo hills, which share a border with Assam, has been put on alert to check influx of illegal immigrants. Documents are checked at Mendipathar railway station.”
The Manipur government has constituted two separate committees at the state and district levels to monitor the entry or presence of illegal immigrants post publication of the final draft. Twenty-five personnel of the 7th India Reserve Battalion, nine teams of police commandos, two companies of Manipur Rifles, two companies of CRPF and 30 women police personnel have been deployed in Jiribam along Assam-Manipur border.
Police in Arunachal Pradesh have in the last two days identified 100 inner line permit violators. A senior official added as per the instructions of the director-general of police, regular checks are being conducted at various locations, especially construction sites, to check the ILP status of labourers.
