Delhi Water Crisis: AAP moves Supreme Court, files plea seeking more water from Haryana

The Delhi government on Friday approached the Supreme Court regarding the water problem in Delhi. A petition has been filed to provide additional water to the national capital from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh for a month.

The petition said, "Delhi's need for water has increased in the scorching heat. It is everyone's responsibility to fulfil the needs of the country's capital.”

Water Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi has accused the BJP-ruled Haryana of stopping Delhi's share of Yamuna water since May 1, causing shortage in many parts of the city.


"We have written a letter to the Haryana government, and we will also reach out to the central government so that Delhi receives its fair share of water. It is the shortage of water that is causing turmoil in various parts of Delhi due to Haryana's arbitrary actions. If there is no raw water, how will water production happen?," Atishi said during her visit to Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant for inspection on Thursday.

The national capital is facing water shortage due to unprecedented summer heat with temperatures hovering around the 50 degrees Celsius mark in parts of the city.

According to an agreement, Haryana is supposed to daily provide 719 cusecs (cubic foot per second) of water to the national capital, but the state is instead providing 1,049 cusecs of water per day, Sachdeva said.
