Delhi relaxes marriage rules for couples from other states

Delhi government has relaxed its marriage registration rules which may help couples from other states get their marriages registered here without much hassle.

NEW DELHI: Delhi government has relaxed its marriage registration rules which may help couples from other states get their marriages registered here without much hassle.

The Delhi Cabinet in a meeting here did away with a clause in the Delhi Hindu Marriage Registration Rules, 1956 under which a marriage can be registered in the city if the couple proves that either of them or parents of at least one of them have been a resident of the area falling under the jurisdiction of the registrar for at least a month.

The marriage, however, has to take place in the capital.

Couples wanting to get their marriages registered in the city have been facing difficulties because of the particular clause. Couples from other states will be able to easily get their marriages registered in Delhi now, officials said.

The move comes against the backdrop of several cases of honour killing taking place in the city.

Couples facing threat of ' khap' (clan) panchayats in neighbouring states will also be able to get their marriages registered in the city.
