Delhi Polls: 70% of AAP’s funding came in last one month

NEW DELHI: Although Aam Aadmi Party failed to meet its target of collecting Rs 30 crore for this election, its supporters say it did succeed in fighting and winning an election funded by transparent donations.

An analysis of the party funding shows that of the Rs 18 crore that the party collected, more than 70% was collected in the 27 days between January 12, 2015 (when the election was announced) and February 7, 2015 (the day it took place).

Its funding started peaking from the new year. In the 38 days between January 1 and the day of elections, there were only three days when it received less than Rs 10 lakh in funds.

The data also suggests that various political events that might have had an adverse impact on the party's prospects were followed by a surge in donations. For instance, donations were among the highest on the day Kiran Bedi joined BJP and when Congress announced its manifesto promising cheaper electricity.

A comparison with previous elections also suggests that the party is at the peak of its popularity. Between January 1 and February 7 this year, it collected around Rs 15 crore. From March 1, 2014 to April 7, 2014, it had received about Rs 13.3 crore.
