NEW DELHI: In the wake of rape of a 27-year-old woman by a cab driver here, Delhi BJP MPs today raised the issue of safety of women in the national capital with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

According to the MPs, Singh told them that he had instructed Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi to take necessary steps in this regard.

"The Delhi MPs met Home Minister Rajnath Singh today and raised the issue of the safety of women, in the wake of the recent rape incident. He spoke to the Delhi Police Commissioner and instructed him to take necessary steps," Delhi West MP Pravesh Verma said outside the Parliament.

Delhi North-east MP Manoj Tiwari said action should be taken not only against the driver, but also those responsible for security lapses.

"We met Rajnath Singh and discussed how to improve the safety of women. There should be zero-tolerance against this issue. We want an early result in the case. Looking at the 'Nirbhaya' case (of December 2012), we also appeal to the courts to expedite rape cases at the earliest," Tiwari said.

East Delhi MP Maheish Giri said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed police chiefs recently, which reflects his government's intention to seriously deal with such issues.
