NEW DELHI: Delhi government today sought to take credit for the Centre's decision to slash CNG and PNG prices saying the rates are being cut only after it moved the Supreme Court on the issue.

"Delhi government would like to set the record straight on the entire matter since the central government and Congress are wrongly trying to claim credit for the reduction in prices," stated a press release by the government here today.

CNG prices has been cut by about Rs 15 per kg and cooking gas piped to kitchens by about Rs 5.

Delhi's AAP government had moved the Supreme Court on January 29 challenging the Centre's CNG gas distribution policy which deprived the national capital from the natural resource leading to increase in its price.

Filing a contempt petition against the Director and the Secretary of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Arvind Kejriwal-led governemnt had submitted that the guidelines were in "violation" of the apex court order which had directed the Centre to allocate CNG first to the transport sector.

"The matter was to be heard in the Supreme Court on Monday and Delhi government had also become a party to the case.

"The Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was withdrawing its December 2013 order of hiking the CNG/PNG prices - this was done after Delhi government had filed a contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court," added the statement.
