Delhi CM on Metro corridor cracks: It happens sometimes

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday sought to downplay reports of cracks that have been noticed on piers on three corridors of the Delhi Metro, saying such things do happen sometimes.

"It happens sometimes. The DMRC is studying the nature of the cracks. It has to be examined," Dikshit said when asked about the cracks on various corridors of the Metro including the cracks on two piers of newly-constructed Yamuna Bank-Noida line.

Dikshit said a crack here and there does not mean the entire construction is faulty.

Eighteen piers on three corridors of the Delhi Metro have developed "minor" cracks and DMRC has kept them under the observation of its engineers, taking no chance after the July 12 mishap that killed six persons.

The hairline cracks on 18 piers on three corridors which are under-construction were noticed by DMRC engineers who conducted inspections on all the Metro corridors.

The cracks on two piers with cantilevers on the newly-constructed Yamuna Bank-Noida Metro corridor have been noticed at a time when the DMRC has begun trial runs on the line, which is set to be opened for public by the end of August.
