Delhi child rape case: Mayawati demands discussion in Parliament

NEW DELHI: Condemning the rape of a five year-old in the city, BSP chief Mayawati on Monday demanded an immediate discussion on the issue in Parliament and reforms in the police force.

She said recurrence of such incidents despite the passage of a law recently to stop atrocities against women raises questions about the "shortcomings in the system" and policing.

"A law strict law was passed after the Delhi gangrape incident. But despite that, recurrence of incidence like this forces us to think about the law and order situation, about policing and the prevailing social mindset," she told reporters outside Parliament.

She demanded an "immediate dicussion" on the issue in Parliament and reforms in the police force by the government. "At the same time there should be a change in the mindset to stop such incidents," she said.

Noting that crime against women is on the rise in Uttar Pradesh, she said that her party has been insisting on President's rule in the state.

"We have served notice in both Houses of Parliament for a discussion about the prevailing situation in Uttar Pradesh," she said.

Asked for her reaction on the draft JPC report, Mayawati said she would react only after going through the report.
