Delhi Budget: No new projects in health sector
NEW DELHI: The plans and proposals cited for the health sector by the Delhi government in its budget can largely be described as old wine in a new bottle. While no new projects have been announced this year, the outlay for the sector has seen a marginal increase — to Rs 1,243 crore from last year’s Rs 1,019 crore.

This year’s highlights include completion of the 500-bed ward block at GTB Hospital in Shahdara, construction of orthopaedic block at Lok Nayak Hospital, increase in bed capacity of GB Pant Hospital from 200 to 700 by September , construction of Phase II of the Institute of Liver and Billary Sciences , and a s u p e r- s p e - ciality hospital for liver and related diseases. These projects had been mentioned in the last budget and even the year preceding that.

The budget announces three 200-bedded hospitals at Vikaspuri, Burari and Ambedkar Nagar and a 750-bedded hospital at Dwarka in public-private partnership (PPP) mode’ ’ besides the plan to start indoor services at Delhi State Cancer Institute in two months.

Notably, health minister Kiran Walia’s plan to facilitate best-deal health insurance schemes through private agencies finds no mention in the budget. Also, there is no update on the upgrade of existing CATS ambulance fleet.
