NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel today proposed to presiding officers of legislative bodies that a 15-day special session should be held to address the problems of common people and suggested that it should be named ' janata ka session' (People's Session).

"Such a special session should be dedicated to find solutions to three major problems plaguing the country -- floods, drought and lack of health care," he said as he addressed the 78th Conference of Presiding Officers of Legislative Bodies in India at Gandhinagar.

"We need to ensure minimum 60 days sittings of the House in a year," Goel said, adding there should be a summer session for this purpose in addition to the existing Budget, Monsoon and Winter Sessions.

Optimistic that in future Delhi Assembly will be able to sit for longer duration, Goel said, "Delhi Assembly last year sat for 26 days and cleared 23 bills in a span of 10 months."

Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Bandana Kumari, who supported the idea, said there should be "a law that makes it mandatory for state legislatures to sit for at least 60 days in a year."
