MUMBAI: NCP criticised the opposition parties for their outcry about missing names in the voter list, saying if there were any errors they could have got them rectified before the polling.

Complaints of valid names going missing from the voter list were received in a large number in Mumbai and Pune.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said here that the Election Commission had provided CDs containing list of the deleted names of deceased voters, or those who have shifted elsewhere as well as duplicate names.

"The parties were also asked to appoint booth-level agents and participate in the exercise of rectifying errors if any," Malik said, adding that this was not done.

The schedule for deletion of names and revision of lists was published but people ignored it, Malik said.

"We (now) appeal to the people to register themselves after May 17 for the coming Maharashtra Assembly elections," he said.

"Political parties failed to crosscheck the deletions and apprise the Election Commission of errors, if any. They failed in their duty and have no business now to make an issue of it," Malik said.

He also rubbished the claim that the increased voting percentage in the state was a result of "Modi wave". "Minorities, Dalits, tribals, farmers are firmly with the Congress-NCP. Opposition's claim is baseless," he said.
