NEW DELHI: Buoyed by the Supreme Court’s overruling of clemency for an Andhra Pradesh convict, senior BJP leader LK Advani on Thursday pressed for immediate decision on the pending mercy petition for Mohammad Afzal, insisting the delay in the execution of his death sentence was dividing both the country and the security forces.
“I request that there should not be a single-day delay in implementation of the court decision on Afzal,” he told reporters on the margins of a book release event at his home here.
The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, whose party has vowed a week-long campaign to demand hanging of the Parliament attack convict as ordered by the court, insisted that the delay by the government in disposing of the mercy petition for Afzal was "dividing" the country and the security forces.
Also, he alleged terrorists perceived the delay as India being a soft state which has no “guts” to deal with them.
“Do not delay (the decision on execution) by a single day,” he remarked.
