NEW DELHI: Defence Research & Development Organisation ( DRDO), the country's premier military weapons developer, has bagged the Thomson Reuters India Innovation Award for 2014 in recognition of its work in the field of filing patents and research.

The award, given in the category of "Research Institutions", was received by Avinash Kumar, Additional Director ( IPR) at the DRDO headquarters, on behalf of the organisation at a function held in Mumbai yesterday, according to an official release.

The award was adjudged on the basis of patents filed, efficiency and effectiveness of research, the impact of innovations as measured by patent citations and international competitiveness, it said.

DRDO had also won the Thomson Reuters India Innovation Award in the category of "Hi-Tech Academic & Government" in 2011.
