Kerala government's ambitious scheme to provide rice at Rs 1 per kg to BPL families will be formally launched by defence minister AK Antony.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala government's ambitious scheme to provide rice at Rs 1 per kg to BPL families will be formally launched by defence minister AK Antony on Saturday.

The "rice at Rs 1 per kg" scheme would benefit 20,56,535 ration card holders and inmates of orphan homes, Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob said.

The scheme was aimed at creating "poverty-free" Kerala, he said in a statement.
