Deep depression: Kerala departments on alert

Thiruvananthapuram: With a deep depression hovering over southwest Bay of Bengal, the Kerala state Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Tuesday issued directions to various government departments to remain vigilant.

The India Meteorological Department has issued Red alert, indicating heavy to very heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours, for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathnamthitta and Alappuzha districts on December 3, while Orange alert (6 cm to 20 cm rains) for Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts the same day.

All these seven districts have been issued Orange alerts for December 4.


The SDMA has also asked the state government departments to arrange relief camps at the regions prone to landslides and floods by December 2.

"Revenue, Police, Fire Force, Fisheries, Water authority, Electricity Board and local self-government bodies should take necessary precaution.

There is a complete ban of fishing activities along Kerala coast," the SDMA said in a release.
