Decision to abolish gowns for convocation in Nov: Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh

JAIPUR: Dubbing the colonial era practice of wearing caps and gowns at convocation ceremonies as a "sign of slavery", Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh has said the a decision to abolish it would be taken in a meeting of Vice-Chancellors of universities next month.

Speaking at the sixth convocation ceremony of MDS Univesity in Ajmer yesterday, he congratulated the VC for introducing a dress code matching with Indian culture for the occasion.

The Governor said the system of wearing gowns and caps in convocation ceremony is the sign of slavery and he would take a decision to end it in a meeting with vice chancellors in November, a release said.

Addressing students, the Governor said children and youths nowadays get depressed easily in adverse situations but they should not lose confidence and positivity under any condition.

He suggested that youths should be entrepreneurs so that they can become independent and contribute to the nation's economy and growth.

Rajasthan Minsiter of State for Education Vasudev Devnani, VC Kailash Sodani and others were present on the occasion.
