Death toll from Saudi blast rises to 38

The death toll from Sunday's natural gas pipeline explosion in Saudi Arabia has jumped to 38 even as six Indians, among the dead, have been identified.

DUBAI: The death toll from Sunday's natural gas pipeline explosion in Saudi Arabia has jumped to 38 even as six Indians, among the dead, have been identified.

The six are Patel Balwant Prabhubhai, Manjit Singh, Mohammed Halim, Mohammed Hussain Pathan, Aziz Hussain and Biju Kolancherry George, Indian officials said here, quoting a list released by state oil conglomerate Aramco.

The blaze erupted Sunday night on the Haradh-Uthmaniyah gas pipeline, 30 kms from a major gas processing plant at Hawiyah, as maintenance work.

Of those killed, the Saudi nationals worked for the Aramco, while the others worked for two contractors, both Indians, they said.

At least 60 persons also suffered burn injuries, reports here said.

"Necessary operational adjustments have been made to the gas system to normalise operations to ensure continuity of fuel supply," the company said.

Aramco is undertaking projects to boost output at the natural gas liquids recovery plant in Hawiyah. The Hawiyah plant is one of the major gas processing plants in Saudi Arabia, built in the desert near the Al-Ghawar oil field, the world's largest, and south of the city of Dhahran, an oil hub.

Abdallah Jumah, CEO of Saudi Aramco, accompanied by a number of his aides, visited the site to find out the reasons for the blast. Most bodies could not be recognised and required DNA tests to identify them.

King Fahd Hospital in Hofouf was reportedly holding 27 bodies and the remaining bodies were transferred to Safa Public Hospital.
