Deals between two persons can't be probed on implied corruption charges: Chidambaram

MUMBAI: Transactions between two private individuals cannot be questioned on basis of "implied act of corruption", Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in response to a query if government will probe allegations against Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra for certain realty deals.

"I am not aware of the rightness or wrongness of the allegations .... transactions between two private individuals cannot be questioned on the basis of certain imputed or implied act of corruption," Chidambaram told reporters here.

He said "in fact what I have gathered is" that these transactions are between two private individuals and they have been disclosed in the appropriate income tax and other returns.

"...and nobody has alleged any quid pro quo or any corrupt motive, beyond that I cannot say anything," he added.

Civil society activists Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan had yesterday alleged that Vadra had been favoured by realty major DLF.

They demanded probe into Vadra's affairs as also how his business has grown to Rs 300 crore with a tiny capital base.

Earlier today, Congress also rejected demands for an inquiry into the allegations.
