Dayanidhi Maran to go with party, but attempts to emerge out of it
Former union minister and DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has said that he would vote in favour of the UPA government in Tuesday’s trust vote.
In a hastily organised press meet at the car shed of his house in Chennais posh Boat Club road, Mr Maran said: "I believe nuclear deal is good for the country. I believe in the credibility of prime minister Manmohan Singh."
For the last one year, Mr Maran had kept away from the press, even though he hit the headlines now and then. For example, he and his elder brother Kalanithi Maran who owns the hugely popular Sun TV, were not allowed to greet their grand-uncle on his 85th birthday seen as an indication that their troubled relationship with Mr Karunanidhis immediate family, and therefore with the DMK party, has become irredeemable. There were also reports about Mr Maran starting his own party.
Sundays press conference was in stark contrast to the previous one he addressed a year back when the chances of a reconciliation between the Maran brothers and Karananidhi family did not seem so bleak. He held the conference in his late father Murasoli Marans house, not far from Mr Karuananidhis. He did not surround himself with his supporters and swore his eternal loyalty to the party.
But, on Sunday, even Mr Maran was not hopeful about the relationship getting better. "Even if Kalaignar wants a reconciliation, those around him will not allow that to happen," he said. The usually uncluttered streets of the Boat Club Road were dotted with half a dozen vans and mini buses that had brought Marans supporters who called out to him to start his own party. Asked if that was an option he was considering, Mr Maran said: "I am still a DMK member," without commiting anything about the future.
