D D Lapang resigns as Meghalaya chief minister
Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang resigned on Wednesday just before the trust vote in the assembly, saying his government was unable to muster a majority.
"Congress could not get the requisite support, so the CLP decided to resign," Lapang said shortly after a Congress Legislature Party meeting on Wednesday morning.
He said he was going to Governor S S Siddhu to submit his resignation.
Speaking about the rival Meghalaya Progressive Alliance, he said "it is a bundle of contradictions and will last three months. The Congress will be back."
NCP leader P A Sangma said the MPA would meet at noon and stake claim to form the new government.
The swearing in was likely to be held in the evening, he said.
