CWC meet over Parliament session

A meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) is also scheduled to be held on November 17, the party said.

NEW DELHI: A meeting of the Congress Working Committee will be held here this evening to discuss issues including the Indo-US nuclear deal, which is expected to be discussed during Parliament's winter session beginning November 15.

A meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) is also scheduled to be held on November 17, the party said.

Today's CWC meeting is expected to be a preparatory affair for the AICC meeting, which will be a day-long exercise.

The AICC meeting and Parliament's winter session, which has been advanced, is being held in the shadow of the controversy over the Indo-US nuclear deal. It also assumes significance in view of the assembly elections in Gujarat, which are being seen as an acid test for the party.

The AICC meeting is also likely to be a launching pad for Rahul Gandhi, who was recently appointed Congress General Secretary and is being projected as the future leader of the party.

It is expected to come up with a comprehensive resolution instead of separate resolutions on political, economic and international affairs.

The AICC meeting is being held at a time when the Congress-led coalition at the Centre is facing its biggest ever crisis in the last three-and-a-half years on the nuclear issue.

An amendment to the party Constitution is also likely to make a single category of party members instead of the current "primary" and "active" memberships.

Congress has been maintaining that it would resolve the problems over the nuclear deal through dialogue and has expressed itself against mid-term elections.
