Customs authorities have issued summons to Bhushan Steel Chairman Brij Bhushan Singhal in connection with alleged duty evasion on goods said to be valued at around Rs 20 lakh brought by him on his return from London on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Customs authorities have issued summons to Bhushan Steel Chairman Brij Bhushan Singhal in connection with alleged duty evasion on goods said to be valued at around Rs 20 lakh brought by him on his return from London on Thursday.

Customs sources said representatives of 74-year-old Singhal and his wife would appear in connection with the case as both are said to be unwell.

"The summons have been issued for July 14 and the representatives would appear before the Customs," a spokesperson for Bhushan Steel said.

Bhushan and his wife who were returning from London had allegedly cleared through the green channel meant for travellers without any dutiable goods.

However, Customs officials detained two aides of Singhal who had come to receive him as they were found carrying the couple's baggage which had items worth about Rs 20 lakh. Under law, anything above Rs 25,000 is dutiable and has to be declared to the Customs.
