Customer finds caterpillar in Veg Biryani in IKEA Hyderabad restaurant

Nearly a month after its inaugural launch in Hyderabad, Swedish home furniture giant IKEA has faced embarrassment after a customer alleged that a caterpillar was found in a food order served to him. According to a Bangalore Mirror report, the incident happened on Friday when a customer Abeed Mohammad ordered a vegetable Hyderabad Biryani in IKEA's Hyderabad store. The customer posted a picture of his food having caterpillar in his plate on Twitter and filed a complaint in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), who fined the store for Rs 11,500.

According to the report, the IKEA management has tendered apologies to the customer. The municipal corporation, however, has issued notices to the IKEA restaurant manager as well as to the veg biryani vendor, Haldiram at Nagpur. IKEA procures prepared veg biryani from Haldiram.



“We regret the incident and apologise to our customer for the unfortunate experience. We would like to assure him and everyone else that we are investigating the matter currently to assess what happened and take immediate corrective action. At IKEA we have the strictest guidelines when it comes to food safety and quality as customer health and safety are something we care about deeply,” Mirror quotes an IKEA spokesperson as saying.

After 12 long years of planning and six year after it made an announcement, Ikea had opened its first Indian store in Hyderabad on August 9.
