LUCKNOW: Curfew like situation prevailed in the old parts of Lucknow on Thursday, a day after clashes between two sects of a religious group which left a man dead.

The tension between the two sects over the last one week saw clashes erupting on Wednesday night after a religious congregation at a mosque in Wazirganj locality was attacked. There was firing, stone pelting and arson which left a man identified as Shanu dead with gun shot injuries.

As the funeral procession of the dead man was being taken out on Thursday noon, tension again gripped the old city area of Lucknow. There was firing in the air and protestors indulged in stone pelting on the streets. Curfew like situation prevailed most parts of the day with shops remaining closed and people keeping off the streets.

The protestors kept the body of the dead man on the road demanding action against the other group even as the District Magistrate Anurag Yadav and SSP had a hard time controlling the mob.

While Wazirganj remained the epicentre of the violence, tension prevailed through most parts of old Lucknow with an undeclared curfew like situation. The police however said that the situation was under control and things were returning to normal.
