Curfew lifted as B'lore limps back to normalcy
Night curfew clamped on parts of communal violence-rocked Bangalore, that claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy Kaleem in police firing on Sunday night, was lifted as the city scarred by communal clashes, rioting, arson and looting since Friday n...
However, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Indian Penal Code would be in force till Tuesday evening and the police would be maintaining a tight vigil in all sensitive areas of Bharatinagar and Jayamahal assembly constituency, Karnataka home and law minister M P Prakash said adding: ``The situation will be reviewed on Tuesday morning.
In fact, the police had relaxed the curfew restrictions in two police station limits in the morning itself enabling the people in the affected areas to go about their normal activities. The regular city police platoons as well as the Rapid Action Force men took out flag marches in the violence rocked areas during the day to instill confidence in the people.
``We will be maintaining a tight vigil throughout the affected places and be extra vigilant, said city police commissioner N Achuta Rao, adding that the schools that had been closed on Saturday and Monday in the troubled areas were likely to be opened on Tuesday.
A massive protest rally organised by the Peoples Front under the leadership of former union minister C K Jaffer Sharief, Congress MP from Bangalore north, and attended by former chief minister Dharam Singh, KPCC president Mallikarjuna Kharge and other Congress leaders, on Friday against hanging of former Iraq president Saddam Hussain on Friday led to communal clashes in parts of the Bharatinagar and Jayamahal assembly constituencies. The tense situation continued even on Saturday. But the Virat Hindu Samjothsava organised by the Sangh Parivar outfits in several parts of the city led to communal clashes and police had to open fire after tear gas shells and lathi charge failed to quell the mob.
Meanwhile, Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who held a review meeting with the home minister, chief secretary P B Mahishi, home commissioner Vatsala Vatsa, DGP K R Srinivasan, city police commissioner N Achuta Rao and other senior officials to assess the situation in the city during the last three days, appealed to the people belonging to all religious communities and political leaders to cooperate in maintaining peace and communal harmony.
Cautioning the people against falling prey to rumour-mongering, the chief minister urged the people and all leaders to ensure that the citys image was not tarnished by violent incidents and communal clashes as it would damage the shake the confidence of investors. He also warmly complimented the police for effectively handling the situation, despite facing the mob fury.
The chief minister announced a solatium of Rs 1 lakh to the parents of the 12-year-old boy, who was killed in Sunday nights police firing, and a compensation of Rs 25,000 each to those who suffered bullet injuries. Free medical treatment had been given to all others who suffered minor injuries during the violent incident, he said blaming vested interests for fomenting the communal violence as part of their attempt to destabilise the JD(S)-BJP coalition regime and tarnish the governments image.
Stoutly rejecting KPCC president Mallikarjuna Kharges demand for instituting a judicial inquiry into the violent incidents, Kumaraswamy said the government had handled the situation effectively and the police did a splendid job in maintaining law and order as compared to similar instances in the state when the Congress party was in power. However, departmental inquiries would go on as mandated by law under such circumstances.
The government, however, was seriously examining a proposal to bring in a legislation to ban all processions and protests within the city and make arrangements for such activities at a designated place outside the city so as to minimise the public inconveniences. Another proposal under the governments active consideration was compelling the organisations or individuals holding protests, rallies or giving bandh calls to pay damages in the event of trouble, he added.
