Curfew in Shillong, restriction on internet services

Following the violence, Chief minister Conrad K Sangma held a emergency cabinet meeting and reviewed the law and order situation.

GUWAHATI: An indefinite curfew has been clamped in parts of Shillong in Meghalaya after violence broke out between police and an angry mob.

The incident took place following allegations of beating up a driver by residents of a locality on charges of eve teasing. Another report said the incident was triggered after a bus hit a girl. Later in the evening, a mob gathered at the Punjabi Lane area in the city and started pelting stones at security personnel.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma held a emergency cabinet meeting and reviewed the law and order situation. The district administration imposed restrictions on internet services in and around Shillong.


Meghalaya Home Minister James Sangma said, "The incident started on Thursday, following which curfew was imposed. We are monitoring the situation and the chief minister has already reviewed the situation with top police and district officials. The Chief Minister also held a meeting of his Cabinet and urged people to maintain order and not take law in their hands."

Peter S Dkhar, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC), said that curfew under Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, ama Villa, Qualapaty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment and parts of Mawlong Hat localities.
