About 25 houses were torched and as many ransacked in three villages by clashing groups of two communities forcing police to impose indefinite curfew in the affected areas in this district of West Bengal on Monday.

HOWRAH: About 25 houses were torched and as many ransacked in three villages by clashing groups of two communities forcing police to impose indefinite curfew in the affected areas in this district of West Bengal on Monday.

Superintendent of Police, Niraj K Singh said violence broke out over a dispute in a jewellery shop at Mirbazar in Panchla police station area. Soon two groups of people clashed with each other and set ablaze about 25 houses and ransacked another 25 at Mirbazar, Ranihati and Khalisani villages.

Police fired about twenty teargas shells to disperse the mob, but failed to bring the situation under control.

Finally indefinite curfew was imposed in the entire Panchla police station area and parts of adjacent Ranihati and Khalisani villages, Singh said.
