Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday took to social media platform X to raise concerns over law and order in the country following the incident in Odisha.

"The horrific incident that happened in Odisha has raised serious questions on the law and order situation in the country," tweeted Gandhi.

He termed the incident as a "shame on entire humanity".

"An army officer who went to the police for help was brutally beaten up and his fiancée was tortured in custody. This heinous incident is a shame on the entire humanity," the Congress leader said.

He alleged that rimes against women have become uncontrollable in the BJP-era.

"Under the BJP government, crimes against women have become completely uncontrolled and unbridled. When injustice thrives and finds shelter within the government system itself, then from whom should the common citizen look for help?" he added.

Demanding strict action, Gandhi said, "All the culprits of this incident deserve the strictest legal punishment - strict action needs to be taken against them to set an example of justice and security before the people of India, especially women."

Odisha army officer, fiancee assaulted in police station

An army officer and his fiancee were allegedly assaulted at Bharatpur Police Station on the night of September 15, when the Army Major and his fiancée visited the Bharatpur Police Station to file a complaint against some miscreants who had harassed them while returning from a hotel. Instead of addressing their concerns, the police allegedly tortured both the Major and the woman, with the latter being sent to jail without justification.

In response to the incident, retired Armed Forces officers, led by Brigadier Antaryami Pradhan, President of the Ex-Servicemen Association of Odisha, staged a protest in Bhubaneswar, calling for criminal proceedings against the police officers involved.

The police have suspended five officers from Bharatpur Police Station pending further investigation into the allegations. However, the family of the victims and protestors continue to demand termination and imprisonment for those responsible.
