The CPM politburo’s two-day session starting Tuesday will draft a preliminary strategy to contest assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh which are scheduled in 2007. The politburo will also discuss recent political developments in Jharkhand, and possibly press for resignation of the Arjun Munda government.

The draft strategy for contesting elections in Punjab and UP will be placed before the CPIM central committee which meets in Delhi on September 24, said a senior CPIM leader on Monday.

The CPIM has established an electoral adjustment with the Samajwadi Party-led by Mulayam Singh Jadav in UP. Another Left Front constituent CPI, however, does not approve of the CPIM’s decision to strike a poll alliance with the SP. Which is why, the CPIM will prepare a note justifying the decision to team up with Mulayam Singh Jadav.

The political imbroglio in Jharkhand is another issue which the politburo will address at the Kolkata session. Three ministers of the BJP-led Arjun Munda’s government have expressed no confidence in him and are meeting UPA leaders in this light. The CPIM will try to exploit the situation to bring the curtain down on Jharkhand’s Munda regime.
