CPM not worried about Bloc's threat to part ways
The CPM isn’t reading much into the Forward Bloc’s threat to contest the 2008 panchayat elections independently.
In fact, there’s an air of expectancy that party heavyweights like Jyoti Basu and Biman Bose will step in and do the needful in convincing the Bloc leadership to reconsider its bid to contest the three-tier rural polls alone.
Even though Mr Basu remains indisposed, CPM stalwarts remain hopeful that the veteran Marxist would be able to convince Bloc chief Ashok Ghosh to abandon the idea of contesting the panchayat polls alone.
So much so, CPM central committee member Shyamal Chakraborty visited Mr Basu’s Salt Lake residence on Tuesday and apprised him about the latest political developments in the state, including the Bloc’s decision. Party sources claimed Mr Chakraborty was also supervising the medical treatment of Mr Basu on behalf of the state secretariat and visited Indira Bhavan — the official residence of former chief minister to inquire about his health.
