CPM meeting to evaluate acquisition drive on May 6
The CPM state committee will meet on May 6 to find out the success rate of its campaign favouring land acquisition for industrialisation.
The CPM has launched a state-wide campaign to convince people about the necessity of land acquisition shortly after the first incidents of violence were reported at Nandigram in January. The party had decided to run the campaign till February, but subsequently extended it till March. Now, after the Nandigram killings of March 14, the party is determined to carry on with the process for some more time.
Nandigram continues to remain out of bounds for the state administration and the CPM. Besides, it is still out of CPM’s control. The March 14 incidents have affected land acquisition in different parts of West Bengal and cracks have also surfaced within the Left Front because of this. Even now, CPM workers and leaders at Nandigram are subjected to attacks from the Krishijami Bachao Samity (Save farmland committee).
Attempts have also been made to to kill a number of CPM leaders there. Leaders of CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc who visited the area have, however, been left alone. The state committee meeting on May 6 hopes to address all these issues and try to ascertain the positive impact of their land acquisition campaign, if any. It is learnt that the government will also renew its drive to acquire farmland after the meeting is over.
