CPM may sever ties with DMK, RJD

CPM to severe ties with DMK and RJD in connection with the political turmoil over the nuclear deal.

NEW DELHI: The political turmoil over the nuclear deal is all set to redefine the CPMs relations with UPA parties.

Sources said CPM has made up its mind to snap ties with DMK and RJD. While the party has already put the Samajwadi Party in the enemy column, the CPM will announce severing of ties with Mr M Karunanidhi and Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav after the trust vote.

The CPM, which is ready for a re-appraisal of AIADMK, is keen on forging a broad anti-Congress, anti-BJP alliance with the help of BSP. Mr Chandrababu Naidu, who has been drafted into this project will be meeting Ms Mayawati in the third week of July to discuss the possibilities of a lasting political arrangement.

The CPM, which is determined to complicate matters for DMK, is keen to be part of an ADMK-led front in Tamil Nadu. The PMK, which has severed links with DMK, is expected to cross over to the rival side closer to the Lok Sabha polls. This alliance, the CPM feels, will have the political wherewithal to take on DMK. The CPM has nine MLAs in the Tamil Nadu assembly.

In Bihar, the party sees the RJD as a spent force. Although Lalu Yadav has been maintaining that the Left continues to be a valued friend, the CPM does not see any political gain from linking its fortunes with the RJD. According to non-partisan opinion, RJD will experience an electoral meltdown in the state in the next polls.

The Lefts stand will be discomforting for UPA allies. They have been taking care not to offend sensitivities of the Left. It also signals a setback for the Congress hopes to retain its role as the core of a secular alliance.

Barring the politically naive in the Congress and the prime ministerial establishment, a significant section in the Congress is conscious of the pitfalls in antagonising the Left. A political combination that has the BSP, AIADMK, TDP and the Left can emerge as a major player in the event of the two major parties failing to cross the 150 seats mark.
The principal aim of this side will be to complicate matters for the Congress.
