CPM enraged as governor shows solidarity with people
MR Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who had angered the Left with his advice to the West Bengal government to mind its manners and morals after the Nandigram violence, is at the receiving end of a nasty attack by the Communists.
The CPM, which sees the Raj Bhawans decision as a move to embarrass the state government, went to the extent of seeking the abolition of the office of the governor. We should seriously think whether we need the governors office 60 years after Independence, said CPMs local boss Biman Bose. Just like his colleagues in Kolkata and Delhi, Mr Bose also believes in stifling dissent. He is usually in the forefront of attempts by the Left to marginalise inconvenient viewpoints and personalities.
The CPM considers the power cut decision of the governor is to advertise the inability of the state government to deal with the situation. Reports from Kolkata said stilled fans and stalled lifts at the Raj Bhavan from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm marked the voluntary power cut decision. There will be another one-hour voluntary power cut at Raj Bhavan from 6 pm to 7 pm, reports quoting a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said. This decision follows Mr Gandhis view that Raj Bhavan need not be an exception to the citys electricity supply situation, he added.
State power minister Mrinal Banerjee expressed surprise over the governors decision. I fail to understand it and it is beyond my comprehension why he took such a decision when the power situation in the metropolis has been improving in the last 10 days. If a person chooses to have a single meal because of food crisis, what can we do, he asked.
The minister came close to mocking the decision of the governor. The meagre amount of power saved due to voluntary power cut at Raj Bhavan cannot be shifted to deficit areas and hence the governors decision is not easy to understand.
The only voice of support for the governor was from transport minister Subhas Chakraborty. If anyone shares the plight of the people, it has to be appreciated and I personally will hail it, he told reporters.
