CPM checks out poll timing

NEW DELHI: The CPM may have emotionally moved to the rival side, but its still keen on knowing the Congresss plans for the nuclear deal and the timing of the next election. Sitaram Yechury, who met Pranab Mukherjee this afternoon, returned to the AKG Centre with the impression that the Congress leadership was firm on backing the prime ministers IAEA plans. On the next elections, Mr Yechury had reasons to feel relieved as Mr Mukherjee is learnt to have told him that allies are just not ready for immediate poll.

The visit of Mr Yechury came in the backdrop of clear indications that the CPM, too, is in no mood for elections. The party is also against sending out an impression that its responsible for the current instability at the Centre. Although the party is against the Congress approaching the electorate with the stability card, it does not want to be held responsible for the unravelling of the secular arrangement.

Mr Yechury, who shared notes of the meeting with his senior colleague Prakash Karat, is quite certain about Samajwadi Partys depature from their side. The Left was hoping that anti-Congressism of its workers will refrain the SP from striking a deal with the Congress. It was this hope that prompted Mr Karat to issue a statement distancing his party from the views of politburo member MK Pandhe. The politburo member had said that the SP will attract the wrath of the Muslim community if it supported the nuclear deal.

The CPM politburo is meeting this Sunday (June 29) to take stock of the situation. The meeting will decide on ending the association with the UPA only if the goverment makes public its plans for the next step on the IAEA. Though CPM leaders have indicated that if the government goes ahead with the deal, the Left could even vote against the UPA, these tactics will be discussed at the meeting. The Congress, which is not ready to take any step in haste, will choose the timing for announcing its plans. This may have to wait till the SP strikes the alliance with the Congress.
Meanwhile, the other Left parties will also convene separate meetings before the four Left parties take a unanimous decision. The CPI central secretariat is meeting on July 3. Sources said the Left will act as soon as the government declared i that it will go ahead with the deal.
