CPI(M) urges Jammu and Kashmir governer to depute expert team to study floods

JAMMU: CPI(M) today asked Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra to depute a team of experts to study the causes of the devastating floods in the state so as to come out with a prevention strategy.

An official spokesman said that state secretary of CPI(M) and MLA elect from Kulgam M Y Tarigami today called on the governor to apprise him about the devastation caused in last year's flood by river Jhelum's major and turbulent tributary Veshu that washed away villages and cultivatable land in south Kashmir particularly in Kulgam district.

"In this connection, Tarigami urged the governor to depute a team of experts comprising of engineers, ecologists, hydrologists and other specialists with the experience necessary to tackle flooding for an in-depth study of this tributary in order to prevent any major floods in future," the spokesman said.

He said that besides discussing various other socio- economic issues pertaining to the state, Tarigami drew the governor's attention on the delay in completion of four laning of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, especially from Banihal upto Srinagar.

"Tarigami urged the governor to direct the authorities concerned to expedite land acquisition and remove other hiccups in order to complete the project without any further delay," he said.

Tarigami said that the delay in completion of this project was proving detrimental to the economic interests of the state.
