CPI(M) to hold plenum in December after 37 years

NEW DELHI: CPI(M) will hold a plenum in December after a gap of 37 years to assess its organisational strength, especially in its one-time bastion of West Bengal, party sources said today.

Preparations for the plenum were discussed during a three- day meeting of the party's Central Committee, which concluded today, they said.

"In the run up to the plenum, the party's politburo has prepared a questionnaire on the basis of which our state committees have framed reports on the organisation's status, specific problems and ways to tackle them.

"These reports are being studied and will be considered by the Central Committee when it meets in October. After necessary amendments by the Central Committee, the draft report will be sent to the state committees. Revised reports will be tabled at the plenary meeting then," a source said.

CPI(M) had decided to hold a plenary meeting during a party congress in April this year.

The party's last plenum was held in 1978 at Salkia in West Bengal.
