NEW DELHI: India should try and persuade Sri Lanka to allow a high-level probe into the allegations of rights violations in the country, CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said today.

"On the issue of Lankan Tamils, our party's stance is that in the United Nations Human Rights Council and other forums, the Indian government should demand a high-level probe into the atrocities that took place during the civil war in Sri Lanka," Karat said.

He said this while reacting to reporters' questions on his party's stance.

"Sri Lanka should be persuaded to get such a probe done and the Indian government should make efforts in this direction," he added.
