CPI(M) flays 'attack' on its West Bengal leader
NEW DELHI: CPI(M) today condemned the alleged attack on its West Bengal unit secretary and opposition leader in the state assembly, Surjyakant Mishra, by ruling Trinamool Congress.

Mishra, also a politburo member, was allegedly targeted during his visit to camps housing flood-affected people in Udanarayanpur in Howrah district yesterday.

"The politburo strongly condemns attack on Mishra and other leaders of the Left Front. Their convoy was stopped en route and attacked by hoodlums of the Trinamool Congress.

"While occupants of the cars escaped unhurt, some of the vehicles were damaged and their windshields broken. While Mishra managed to go ahead with his programme others could not," the party said in a statement.

Such attacks, the CPI(M) said, are aimed at curbing activities of the opposition and are an assault on democratic rights which will not be tolerated by people of the state.

The party said it will continue to fight against such attacks and for restoration of democratic rights in the state.
