KOLKATA: The CPIM dismissed the controversy surrounding Jyoti Basu’s quitting the politburo as a handiwork of an irresponsible media. The politburo, which met on Tuesday in Kolkata, refused to let go of Mr Basu.
Three eminent CPIM politburo members, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, his counterpart in Tripura Manik Sarkar and Biman Bose on Tuesday announced there was no possibility of Mr Basu’s quitting the politburo.
“Basu is an asset to our party and we will not allow him to resign from the politburo,” Mr Sarkar said. Bhattacharjee, however, said that the issue of Basu’s resignation from the politburo was a “creation of the media”.
Biman Bose, another politburo member and chairman of the West Bengal Left Front also said the issue of Basu’s retirement was never on the agenda of the politburo.
The two-day meeting of the politburo began here on Tuesday morning. Basu also attended the meeting during the first half.
