CPIM, CPI cross swords over Singur
So far, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has refused to divulge details of the agreement.
CPI has been criticising the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government for long. It has been opposing acquisition of farmland at Singur. On Tuesday, CPI state secretary and central council member Manju Kumar Majumder had demanded that government come clean on it’s agreement with Tata Motors for the proposed small car venture.
So far, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has refused to divulge details of the agreement. He had told newsmen on Thursday that the state legislature would meet for a brief period from November 17.
It is learnt that the state government may attempt to amend the land laws during the short session by placing some Bills. The state’s intention to amend the land laws is to make existing laws more flexible and enable the government acquire and hand over land for industrialisation.
Sources in the CPI said the party would try hard to resist any move on the part of the government to acquire farmland for industrialisation. “We don’t want any changes in existing land laws, even though the state government is trying to do so to acquire farmland more easily. We may not support the government if it attempts to grab farmland for industrialisation,” said a senior CPI leader.
