CPI to be in anti-SP camp, CPM undecided

NEW DELHI: CPM and CPI will be in different tents if CPM has an electoral tie-up with Mulayam Singh. This became clear on Wednesday when the CPI formally unveiled its anti-Samajwadi Party campaign in Uttar Pradesh, reports Our Political Bureau.

The CPI lashed out at the state government’s economic policies and alleged that the Mulayam Singh regime was working to further the interests of big corporates and compromising with the BJP.

The CPI’s attack on the Mulayam Singh Yadav government comes at a time when the CPM is still mulling over its poll tactics in Uttar Pradesh. Though the Marxists are making familiar noises about not wanting to avoid a split in the ‘secular’ vote, it is against disrupting the anti-BJP bandwagon and repeating a Bihar scenario.

The CPI, which has been working in co-operation with the V P Singh and Raj Babbar-led Jan Morcha, an anti-Mulayam front, is striving for a ‘secular’ alliance sans Mr Yadav.

“The CPI has decided that it cannot go with Mulayam Singh Yadav in the name of SP being a secular force. His government is working at the behest of and to help certain corporate houses while sacrificing the interests of farmers and common people,” CPI general secretary A B Bardhan said at a press conference after a two-day meeting of the party’s national executive.

He said the CPI opposed the state government’s policies, particularly moves to privatise the power sector. “Law and order has broken down and private goons are resorting to violence with the connivance of the police,” Mr Bardhan said. There is a section within the CPM which is opposed to a tie-up with Mr Yadav saying that he has lost credibility, but another view within the party is against isolating the SP.

Asked if the CPI would enter an alliance with the Congress in the state elections, Mr Bardhan said the Congress should decide first what tactic it wanted to adopt.

The poll strategy in the state was discussed a Left parties meeting earlier this month where the CPI spelt out its views against having an alliance with the SP. With the CPM unable to make up its mind, the issue remained inconclusive.

However, in Punjab, Uttaranchal and Manipur, the Left is trying to adopt a joint strategy. In Punjab, the Left is trying to rope in other non-BJP forces like Lokabhalai Party to forge a front against the BJP and the Congress.
