NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday expressed "grave concern" on the Centre's decision to allow 12 corporate houses for participating in the defence sector, saying it will jeopardise the country's security.
"The decision of the government to grant Raksha Udyog Ratna...is a matter of grave concern. This straight forward entry in the most strategic area of the country will seriously jeopardise the country's security," CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said in a release here.
With the spectre of terrorism looming large, a free access to private sector - both Indian and foreign - in manufacturing arms and ammunition would also pose a serious security hazard, he said and alleged this was being done at the expense of state-run ordinance factories.
Arguing that corporate houses would get substantial government financial assistance, Bardhan said they would enter the defence sector as major players with assured public funding and earn profits through supply and exports besides enjoying tax concessions.
He said the defence unions have formed a Trade Union Forum for Self Reliance in Defence to protest against this move and pointed out that the government should first strive to maximise its own production capacity.
"We therefore request government to give second thought to this move before the Defence Acquisition Council and the Ministry of Defence formally approve the granting of the Raksha Udyog Ratna to the corporate houses," he added.
