KANNUR: A CPI-M worker was hacked to death allegedly by some BJP-RSS workers early this morning in Thalassery town here.

The CPI-M has called for a day long bandh in Thalassery municipal limits and the neighbouring Puducherry enclave of Mahe to protest the murder, the second of its kind after a party worker was murdered by suspected BJP-RSS workers at Vankulathvayal near here on January 12.

Police said the CPI-M worker Jijesh (29) was returning home with two others after attending work in connection with a marriage ceremony in a nearby house when he was attacked by a group of suspected RSS-BJP workers with deadly weapons at Nangarathpeedika around 1.30 AM today.

Jijesh, who sustained serious head injuries, was rushed to a hospital in Thalassery and succumbed while being shifted to a private hospital in Kozhikode, police said.

Vehicles have been kept out of the purview of the bandh. No untoward incidents have been reported so far as additional police forces have been rushed to the trouble-torn areas, police said.
