CPI-M concerned over rise in caste-related incidents in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Expressing concern over increase in caste-related incidents in Tamil Nadu, CPI (M) today called for reservation for individuals who opt for self-respect marriages to shun caste, in education and jobs.

The party's two-day State Committee meeting which concluded yesterday, adopted a resolution in this regard, in which it also reiterated its demand that the government enact a separate legislation to deal with honour killings.

The resolution was released today.

While caste-related hatred and movements based on that have been increasing in the state, about 60 honour killings had happened within the past one year, it said adding such a situation has given rise for the need to create a cordial atmosphere for treating all castes alike.

Political and social movements should take up this cause, the State Committee resolved.

"The CPI (M) state Committee urges the Tamil Nadu government to enact a legislation to prevent honour killings," it said.

Further, the 'progressive' recommendations made by the Justice P Mohan Committee, that was formed in 1998 to prevent caste-related violence in the southern districts, should be implemented, it added.

One of them was according 'Special Status' to people who opt for self-respect marriage as well as their wards, and extend the reservation benefit in education and employment, it said.
